Although this board should be able to run most systems without active cooling while operating at 1.4-1.7A/phase, a heatsink is required for loads approaching 2A/phase. An easier option would be to attach a heatsink like one of these to the top of the square IC in the middle of the board with some thermal adhesive. As the motor is running, you can slowly adjust the current adjust pot to see the effect that it has on the smoothness of the motor's motion.
